(04-08-2013) BBC will reveal new Doctor Who star today [ G4dG33t ]

BBC will reveal new Doctor Who star today Aug 4th 2013, 18:58

News By Ryan Whitwam Aug. 4, 2013 12:01 pm

Who

Doctors come and Doctors go, but the BBC will reveal the identity of the next Doctor Who star in a special live event later today. The current Doctor, Matt Smith, has filmed his last Doctor Who special, which will air later this year. Unlike most roles in television, the mantle of The Doctor is passed from one actor to the next every few seasons, and it's been going on for a long time.

There have been 11 different Doctors over the years, stretching all the way back to the early 1960s. The show ran more or less continuously until 1989, when it took a long hiatus. There was a TV movie in the mid 90s, but we don't like to talk about that. Doctor Who was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston playing the main role.

Within Doctor Who mythos, The Doctor is able to generate a total of 12 times, becoming a totally different person. This allows the show to continue on with a different actor in the starring role, but The Doctor is fast running out of lives. Occasional suggestions that there is no limit have been laughed off as jokes by showrunners. When the new actor (whoever it is) takes over the show, that will be the 12th Doctor. Meaning the BBC only has one more regeneration after that, if it wants to stick to the original rules.

Matt Smith took over the show from the much beloved David Tennant in 2010. He was at first seen by many fans as too young for the role, but seems to have won most Whovians over. Quite a few names have been floated as possible choices for the new Doctor, with 55 year-old Peter Capaldi emerging as the odds-on favorite. Ben Daniels from the BBC series Cutting It and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) have also been rumored.

We're going to find out soon who gets to take the Tardis for a spin. Whoever it is, they'll have some big shoes to fill (and they're bigger on the inside). The announcement will be broadcast on BBC and BBC America at 7PM London time, or 2PM ET.

(04-08-2013) New Kickstarter Ban [ G4dG33t ]

New Kickstarter Ban Aug 4th 2013, 17:58

It wasn't too long ago that Kickstarter banned an allegedly misogynistic book from receiving further help than it already had, but it's cracking the ban whip once again. Granted, it's not banning a project, but rather the rewards that projects can offer.

(04-08-2013) Surface Pro Price Cut [ G4dG33t ]

Surface Pro Price Cut Aug 4th 2013, 16:59

The Surface Pro, Microsoft's premier tablet device that's the reason why Windows 8 exists, is receiving a price cut of $ 100 to both its 64GB and 128GB models. This is shortly after the price of the Surface RT was cut by 30% after horrible sale outcomes that cost the company $ 900 million last quarter.

The price cut took effect this weekend and seems to be here to stay, although no official word has been made to say for certain that the cut is permanent. For now, you can be sure to get the Surface Pro for $ 100 off until August 29th.

(04-08-2013) Toilet Bluetooth Security Alert! [ G4dG33t ]

Toilet Bluetooth Security Alert! Aug 4th 2013, 16:20

In my opinion, some things don't need to be upgraded, like toilets. Apparently Inax doesn't agree. They've created Satis, a new toilet currently only found in Japan that is accessible via an Android app. With the app you can control all of the toilet's functions, including jets of water and hot air that come from below. Unfortunately, so can everyone else.

All the toilets are equipped with the same "0000" Bluetooth pin, making it possible for anyone with the My Satis App in range of the toilet able to control it no matter who's using the toilet. The implications should be pretty obvious.

Infinity Blade 3 Might Be Under Development [ G4dG33t ]

Few weeks back, the developers behind one of the most popular games in Apple App Store – Infinity Blade – cancelled the upcoming Infinity Blade Dungeons. It now appears that the folks over at Epic Games are now working on the third sequel of the most popular series. The rumor arise from Kotaku where they found a LinkedIn profile of a senior QA Tester at Chair, the company behind the Infinity Blade series, has listed Infinity Blade 3 for iPhone as one of his projects.

Infinity Blade

Infinity Blade series has been one of the most popular games on the App Store. At the fifth anniversary of the company, the game was available free of cost and was downloaded almost 6 million times during the promotion period. The game made its debut in the App store in 2010 followed by a sequel – Infinity Blade 2 – which was released in 2011.

So, it looks pretty obvious that it might be under development as the company cancelled Dungeons and now, there are testers appearing on the internet. It was even mentioned by Chair Co-Founder Donald Mustard that new games are under development, during the closure announcement of Infinity Blade Dungeons.

I hope the company will come up with an official announcement very soon. Stay tuned, we will update you as soon as we have something about the upcoming Infinity Blade.

Rockmelt Acquired by Yahoo, Closes Down on 31 August [ G4dG33t ]

Yahoo continues its acquisition spree. One of the latest acquisitions has been Astrid, a task management application that was closed down after it was acquired by Yahoo last month. The most recent company to face the closure after getting acquired by the giant corporation is Rockmelt – an internet discovery service.

Rockmelt

The service released its Android application few weeks back that has been taken down after the acquisition. The service will shut down on 31 August so all the Rockmelt users are expected to export their entire data. The company did not disclose the acquisition price but the folks at AllthingsD report that it is somewhere between $60M to $70M.

According to the official blog post,

Yahoo! and Rockmelt share a common goal: To help people discover the best content from around the web. In our short four and a half years at Rockmelt, we've learned a lot about how you like to browse the web, discover content, and share the great stuff you've found. You've been right by our sides as we've celebrated successes, endured failures, and invented new ways of doing things.  You've taught us a ton. And we plan to put everything we've learned to work at Yahoo!

For many of you, Rockmelt has become a daily habit and for that we're eternally grateful… so we've kept all your valuables safe. In each of our products, you'll find a tile to click on that initiates the export service. Your kept items will be exported as bookmarks and the feeds you follow as an OPML file. The Rockmelt apps and web product will be shutdown on August 31, 2013.

There is no word about what the company will do with the service, but I think it might end up in Yahoo's acquisition garage just like Astrid or Xobni and all the other services that were acquired by Yahoo. The only service that didn't face the similar fate was Tumblr which was also taken over by Yahoo.
